Know Who You Are Marketing To



Are you marketing your valuable products and services to your target audience? Knowing your audience is the key to marketing success; you can’t create effective marketing if you don’t know who you’re marketing to. Understanding your target audience is crucial to effectively reaching and motivating your audience to take action.

Pinpoint. Gaining an intimate understanding of your audience requires market analysis, and the more you know, the more confident you will be in connecting with them. Solutions for learning about your audience range from running a survey on your website and studying social media bios of your followers to conducting formal market research studies and focus groups. Knowing your audience’s demographics, learning how they describe themselves, finding out where they spend their time and what they are passionate about is all information that will help you adjust your marketing tactics.

Segment. You may find it useful to partition your target audience into groups of customers with similar needs and/or characteristics, as they are likely to make similar purchase decisions. Audience segmentation will allow you to develop differentiated marketing strategies for each group, opening up the potential for a more refined product mix, more targeted promotional strategies, and more satisfied customers.

Re-define. A solid understanding of your target audience is an ongoing process. Thorough market analysis will help you know your target audience’s needs today, but over time these needs will likely change. To create ongoing marketing success, seek out new information on a regular basis, and keep your knowledge base current.

Looking at the world from your customers’ point of view will continually shape your business. An intimate understanding of your target audience enables you to build responsive products, develop effective promotional strategies, measure your company’s market position, and improve your overall marketing initiatives.
